Code "78" on the Driver's License: The Secret of the Mark that Decides What You Can Drive

Obtaining a Category "B" driver's license — is always a choice: manual (MT) or automatic (AT) gearbox? Previously, this distinction was only for training purposes, but since 2021 in Ukraine, a special mark has appeared in accordance with European norms.

The Association of Driving Schools explains what Code "78" means on your license, how it affects your rights, and why we strongly recommend choosing the universal path. Our goal — is to warn you about possible surprises and help you make a choice that will not limit your future opportunities.

What does Code "78" on the driver's license mean?

Code "78" (restriction) — is a special mark that is placed in the 12th column of the driver's license. Its presence means that you have successfully passed the practical exam in a vehicle with an automatic transmission (AT) and have the right to drive exclusively such vehicles.

Main consequences of having Code "78":

  • Driving an AT: Permitted. You can freely drive any vehicle with an automatic transmission that falls under your category.
  • Driving an MT: Strictly forbidden! Attempting to drive a manual transmission vehicle with this mark will be considered as driving without the corresponding category, which entails a fine (from 3400 UAH, according to Art. 126 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offences).

Our goal — is to warn you! Many novices, choosing an automatic for ease of learning, do not always realize that this restriction will become permanent. If you passed on an automatic, you will not be able to drive a manual until you remove this code.

Why does the "Association of Driving Schools" recommend choosing manual?

We understand that for some students (especially those with health issues or who plan to drive only in large cities), an automatic is a necessity. We do not discourage AT training, but we advise making a strategic choice:

  1. Versatility and Mobility: If you pass the exam on a manual transmission (MT), you receive a license without Code "78". This means you automatically gain the right to drive both types of transmission (manual and automatic). In the future, you can easily get behind the wheel of any car.
  2. Relevance for the Military: This is an extremely important aspect. A large part of military and special equipment, as well as many SUVs used in difficult conditions, are equipped with a manual gearbox. If you or your loved ones are military personnel or plan to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, universal Category "B" licenses are critically important.
  3. Ease of Transition: Our instructors confirm: a driver who learned to drive manual easily and quickly switches to automatic. Conversely, switching from automatic to manual always requires additional effort and cost.

How to remove Code "78" and get a universal license?

If you did receive a license with Code "78" and now want to be able to drive a manual, don't worry. This mark can be removed:

  1. Undergo additional practice: You need to complete an additional practical driving course in a manual transmission car at an accredited driving school. You can contact us for individual lessons with our certified instructors to get the necessary preparation.
  2. Pass the practical exam: After completing the practice, you must successfully pass the practical exam in a manual transmission car at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Service Center.
  3. Obtain a new license: After successfully passing the exam, you will receive a new driver's license without Code "78".
